Lichliter Wins Mason-Dixon Shootout at Hagerstown

By Brett Rose

HAGERSTOWN, MD – James Lichliter drove to victory in the 25 Lap Mason-Dixon Shootout Series headliner on Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway.

The Maurertown, Virginia racer took home $1,000 for his efforts from setting the pace in his No.8 MastersBilt machine after taking the lead away from Craig Wagaman on the high side of the third circuit.

Lichliter was able to stretch out his lead to a half-straightaway over Wagaman until a caution flag waved on Lap 11. A couple laps after the restart, Barry Miller moved around Wagaman into second.

Lichliter caught traffic with two laps to go, and Miller was able to close the gap a little, but the traffic didn’t impede Lichliter’s progress towards the checkered flag.

“We’re used to the 20 lap races here and with 25 (laps), I started to see the rubber come in on the bottom and I was getting worried, but I knew if I caught the lapped cars, I wasn’t sure if they were running side by side and I didn’t know what to do and finally one got around each other. I got up alongside one and knew nobody could get on the outside of me and I continued that line.” said Lichliter.

Miller held on the second as Wagaman, Devin Hart, and 13th starting Justin Weaver rounded out the top five.

Craig Parrill returned to racing at Hagerstown, and he put the Dickie Tharp No.3 back into victory lane by winning the Jim Cornett Tribute for the Pure Stock division.

The winningest Pure Stock driver at Hagerstown in 2017, Parrill had his work cut out for him over the first half of the 20 lap special event as he had to battle Dillon Wilson throughout most the feature race with a side-by-side battle for the lead until taking it over solely by Lap 12.

With three laps to go, a caution setup a restart to give Wilson one more shot, but to no avail. The Clearbrook, Virgina racer picked up his second win of the season in only his third start at the Hub City half-mile.

Wilson’s strong run netted him the runner-up spot. He was followed at the finish by Jeremy Tinsman, Sam Archer, and Bryan Neff.

It took 25 years of racing, but Billy Ecton, Sr. finally celebrated in victory lane with his first career win in the Hobby Stock division. It was also a big moment for the Ecton family with a father/son 1-2 finish as Billy Ecton, Jr. followed him at the checkered flag.

The Ectons were trailed by 14th place starter Don Murphy, Jeff Dillon, and James Speelman.

Taking home the win in the Classic Car Series nightcap was Wes Brown.

Notes: Lichliter said that this win was huge because he finally was going home with a big souvenir check to hang on his shop wall.

The ever popular Small Fry Night was a success with many smiling kids’ faces after getting their chance to take a lap at idle speed in a race car. This has been a longtime tradition at Hagerstown Speedway. Thanks to all of the drivers that participated.
Next week is the Small Car Nationals automatic qualifiers.

Dewease Wins Johnny Grum Memorial at Hagerstown

By Brett Rose

HAGERSTOWN, MD – For the third consecutive year, Lance Dewease drove the Davey Brown prepared, Don Kreitz, Jr. owned No.69k to victory lane at Hagerstown Speedway winning $5,000 in the 30 lap Johnny Grum Memorial in Round 7 of Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek.

Dewease began the feature event from sixth on the grid and quickly moved into the top five by the fourth circuit and was running in fourth place when a caution flag waved for the spun car of Australian racer Jesse Attard on lap seven.

Pole starter Greg Hodnett led the way from the start and was followed by fellow front row starter Ryan Smith, with Freddie Rahmer in tow ahead of Dewease on the restart.

It took two laps for Dewease to move past Rahmer and Smith into the runner-up spot, albeit about a half-straightaway behind Hodnett. Hodnett held that advantage approximately three seconds ahead of Dewease at the halfway point of the contest.

Hodnett searched his way all over the track in the Mike Heffner No.27 through lapped traffic to keep Dewease at bay, but Dewease persevered along the bottom searching for a line that would allow him to reel in Hodnett’s lead.

As the laps wound down toward the end, Dewease pulled to within a couple car lengths of Hodnett. Dewease caught Hodnett with four laps to go, and then made the pass for the lead down low in turn three with three laps remaining.

Once out front, Dewease slightly pulled away to a .522 second advantage over a valiant effort by Hodnett to regain the top spot, but it wasn’t enough as Dewease drove to his 16th career win at the Hub City oval where he picked up his first career win 32 years ago in 1986.

“I was running as hard as I could, making sure I hit my marks. Greg (Hodnett) I think was a little better than us tonight, especially early in the feature. I just kept driving hard and found a line that I could get by those lapped cars. He got by those lapped cars earlier better than I could and I finally found a line in turn one and two to get by them a lot easier. I got at him and he stayed out there a little bit in three and I was going by him one way or the other. I didn’t know if I could hold him off or not and I just wanted to make sure I didn’t lose my pace after that.” said Dewease in victory lane.

Hodnett finished second, followed by Smith, Rahmer and Anthony Macri in the top five.

Spencer Bayston had quick time in time trials with a lap of 17.008 seconds, while Hodnett, Macri, and Dewease were heat race winners. Rico Abreu won the B-main.

Notes: 29 cars were pitside for the only 410 Sprint Car race of the season that included former NASCAR champion Tony Stewart in competition for his first ever start at Hagerstown, while former NASCAR driver and World of Outlaws champion Dave Blaney was also racing. Stewart finished 11th, while Blaney finished 17th.

Dewease’s win moves him into a three way tie for sixth on the all-time Sprint Car win list with Ray Dovel and Bobby Abel whom each won at Hagerstown for their 16th career wins in 1969.

It also marks the 16th career win at Hagerstown for Kreitz as a car owner including his 13 wins as a driver.

Roberson Romps CLM Field for Win at Hagerstown

By Brett Rose

HAGERSTOWN, MD – Logan Roberson was the class of the field as he romped over his fellow competitors in the 20 lap Crate Late Model feature event during Fan Appreciation Night at Hagerstown Speedway.

The youngster from Waynesboro, Virginia won his heat race as well in the same dominant fashion. Roberson quickly put distance over his competition in his No.17 Rocket XR-1 and diced his way through lapped traffic without skipping a beat, lapping up to the ninth place car over the nonstop main event.

The win was Roberson’s eighth overall for the 2018 season. He was followed at the finish by Mike Franklin, Tyler Hershey, Transtan Stoner, and Tanner Kerr.

Jamie Zentmyer picked up his first Pure Stock win of the season in a wild feature event that had its share of carnage and battles. Early frontrunners Sam Archer and Michelle Walls tangled in turn two while battling Zentmyer and Jamey Swank for the lead.

Once the field settled, Zentmyer took command in the lead past the halfway point of the 15 lap feature. Swank finished second, Wayne Hawbaker fought back from the rear after an early incident to finish third, Doug Hoffman finished fourth after starting last in a borrowed ride, and Danny Atherton came back from the rear to cross the checkers in fifth.

Jonathan Raley was the man to beat again in the Hobby Stocks as he wired the field for his third win of 2018. The battle was from second on back as Tom Caravello hanged on to a second place finish while withstanding the challenge from William Ecton, Jr. Billy Ecton rode home in fourth as Brady Daniels rounded out the top five.

The Penn-Mar Vintage Racers provided the nightcap as dual winners were crowned. Randy Minich scored the Modified portion of the feature race and Mike Beidel was the Sportsman winner.

Duke Scores IMCA Sprint Feature at Hagerstown

By Brett Rose

HAGERSTOWN, MD – Ken Duke, Jr. only needed the final lap to lead to score the win in the Mason-Dixon Showdown on Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway.

For the first time in the history of Hagerstown Speedway, the IMCA RaceSaver 305 Sprints were the headlining division at the famed Hub City oval. The interregional event showcased cars from the PASS, Laurel Highlands, and Virginia Sprint Series.

53 IMCA cars were pitside with teams coming as far away from Vermont and North Carolina to compete at the Maryland half-mile for the 24 starting spots in the 25 lap feature event.

Zach Newlin and Ryan Lynn paced the field to the start, but Lynn amazingly did a 360* spin in turn four that unfortunately did cause a couple cars to get tangled up before the first lap was in the books.

Newlin led the way on the restart, but quickly had company with Jeff Miller on his tail. Miller powered by on the sixth circuit to grab the top spot, and looked like the car to beat as he sliced and diced through lapped traffic while running all over the track from the bottom to his own groove over the cushion up high near the guardrail.

Meanwhile, Duke quietly worked his way up to a distant runner-up spot from his 11th –place start on the grid. Fortunately for Duke and unfortunately for Miller, Miller’s mount broke and slowed to stop in the pit area after the white flag lap.

Duke led the final half of the last lap to go in the history books as the victor of the first IMCA RaceSaver event at Hagerstown.

Crossing the checkers behind Duke were Newlin, Scott Lutz from 16th, Tyler Reinhardt, and fifth-place finisher Drew Ritchey.

In his winner’s interview with Danny Wilson, Duke stated: “You know honestly, Jeff Miller, he’s fast everywhere we go. He’s one of the fastest cars in this series. Starting eleventh, I would’ve been happy with a top five. We got up to second and began rolling on the bottom really well, and when he pulled off the backstretch, I just couldn’t believe it to be honest.”

“We’ve gone 21 months without winning a race, and that’s the longest I ever want to go without winning one…..I’ll tell you what, this track really takes well to 305 Sprint Car racing and if you have us back, we’d love to come back.”, said Miller.

Qualifying heat winners John Scarborough, Darren Miller, Ritchey, and Newlin each picked up an additional $50 for their efforts courtesy of Turn 5 Turnaround. Twin B-Main winners were Robbie Bartchy and Cale Reigle.

Doug Hoffman got his second Pure Stock win of 2018, coming on the heels of default as unofficial winner Ryan Sager was disqualified upon post-race inspection. The top five was shuffled even more as Mike Desch also was disqualified. So that left second through fifth going to Jamie Zentmyer, Bryan Neff, Danny Beavers Jr., and Tom Wakefield.

Jonathan Raley grabbed the Hobby Stock feature win, while Matt Worley won the U-Car feature nightcap.

Notes: This was the first race held at Hagerstown since April 28th. It was an absolute beautiful night for racing as 106 cars filled the pit area. Thanks go out to everyone who supported this night.

A wild multi-car flip took place in the second 305 Sprint heat race along the frontstretch following a restart, that saw one car just land over the guardrail into the pit area. No one was injured in the melee.

The Pure Stock feature had its share of controversy and attrition that led to only 12 of the 15 scheduled laps completed due to the 30 minute time limit rule.
Next week, the Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series presented by All Things Automotive comes back for the second time in 2018 with Super Late Models going for $5,000 to win.

Altobelli Scores MAM Feature at Hagerstown

By Brett Rose

HAGERSTOWN, MD – For the first time in series history, the Mid Atlantic Modifieds took center stage as the headlining event at Hagerstown Speedway, and it was Michael Altobelli, Jr. picking up the checkered flag at the end of the 20 lap main event.

It was the third MAM win of the 2018 season for the 33 year old racer out of Saxton, Pennsylvania, and his first career win at the Hub City half-mile.

Altobelli started on the pole and led several laps before being overtaken by former Hagerstown Speedway Pure Stock track champion Mike Corbin. Several cautions past the mid-way point of the feature were the only thing that could slow down the lead pair.

But with just a couple laps remaining, Altobelli powered past Corbin to regain the lead and went on to victory. Rick Hulson was able to get by Corbin for second, while Alyssa Rowe and Ray Kable III rounded out the top five.

“I thought Corbin had me. He looked really good tonight and my car actually got a little bit better the longer the race went there, but that was just a really good race.”, elated a jubilant Altobelli in his winner’s interview.

Sam Archer collected his career first Hagerstown Speedway Pure Stock win in a wire to wire effort to hold off Doug Hoffman in the 15 lap contest.  Jamie Zentmyer, Wayne Hawbaker, and Keith Koontz completed the top five.

Defending Hobby Stock track champion Davey Gross, Jr. was awarded the victory after Jonathan Raley was disqualified due to a technical infraction. All finishers were advanced up a position as it was Kevin Boyer credited with second as Jeff Dillon, Billy Ecton, Jr., and Tom Caravello finished in the top five.

Robbie Carroll picked up the U-Car feature win after a battle with Chris Anderson for the lead. The early race leader regained the top spot as Anderson’s car began to slow down in the final laps. Ricky Weaver, Jr. finished third, Wayne Brenize finished fourth, and Anthony Varner finished fifth.

Scott Rickrode and John Marks won the Penn-Mar Vintage Racers combo feature in the Modified and Sportsman divisions, respectively.

Notes: Next week on May 5, Super Late Models return with the MAM, PS & HS divisions for the Frank Sagi Tribute featuring special guest Buddy Armel along with many others legendary drivers that competed at Hagerstown Speedway.

Davenport Scores LOLMDS Schetrompf Memorial at Hagerstown

By Brett Rose

HAGERSTOWN, MD – “Superman” Jonathan Davenport picked up the $12,000 payday in front of a packed house during the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series 37th annual Stanley Schetrompf Memorial at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.

The 50 lap triumph was his first career win at the Hub City half-mile and the fourth LOLMDS win of the 2018 season for the series point leader. It also marks the eleventh winner in eleven LOLMDS races held at Hagerstown.

The Blairsville, Georgia veteran ran the table on the evening with setting quick time with a lap time of 18.735 seconds, a heat race win from start to finish, and a dominant performance leading wire to wire in the feature event.

Davenport immediate drove away from 2017 Super Late Model track champion Kyle Lee to retain the top spot from his pole position start. Within four laps, multi-time series champion Scott Bloomquist drove his mount into the runner-up spot and began his chase of the leader.

Only two cautions and some racing through lapped traffic allowed Bloomquist and youngster Tyler Bare to close in on Davenport, but the driver of the Lance Landers owned No.49 wasn’t going to be denied victory on this night.

In Victory Lane, Davenport said: “Man, all the credit goes to my crew. They are awesome. Jason and Tyler do a great job, and Kevin (Rumley) is back there working all the time. This was a new car last week, so we’ve got two wins in three races now. It’s definitely a good piece. Thanks to Lance Landers and Steve Martin of Crop Production Services for giving me this opportunity. I was definitely getting tighter and tighter at the end. The track was taking a little bit of rubber especially through three and four. Thanks to all the fans for coming out tonight.”

Bloomquist and Bare finished second and third, respectively while fending off a late-race challenge from Tim McCreadie and Mason Zeigler to round out the top five.

Craig Parrill was victorious in the 15 lap Pure Stock special from behind the wheel of his own No.34c. Parrill withstood the challenges of Jeremy Tinsman for a second feature win in 2018. Sam Archer finished third, while Bob Egley finished fourth and last week’s feature winner Doug Hoffman finished fifth.

Notes:  38 SLM entered the pit area for a race that paid $1,000 to take the green flag.

Trever Feathers had mechanical problems that prevented him from racing in his qualifying heat, but he was guaranteed a starting position on the grid because of his opening night win. Feathers started at the tail end of the field and charged all the way up to sixth place by Lap 22. His bid for the upset win came to an end on Lap 38 when he pulled pitside.

Kyle Lear fell victim to an unfortunate break before the green flag flew. Lear qualified ahead of former World of Outlaws champion Josh Richards in the second B-main, but was unable to compete in the feature event.

A very large crowd filed into the grandstands and witnessed three and four wide racing throughout the pack during the LOLMDS feature event. Feathers wasn’t the only driver that moved up through the field as McCreadie started in 15th, and sixth –place finisher Earl Pearson, Jr. began from 20th on the grid.
