Altobelli Scores MAM Feature at Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, MD – For the first time in series history, the Mid Atlantic Modifieds took center stage as the headlining event at Hagerstown Speedway, and it was Michael Altobelli, Jr. picking up the checkered flag at the end of the 20 lap main event.

It was the third MAM win of the 2018 season for the 33 year old racer out of Saxton, Pennsylvania, and his first career win at the Hub City half-mile.

Altobelli started on the pole and led several laps before being overtaken by former Hagerstown Speedway Pure Stock track champion Mike Corbin. Several cautions past the mid-way point of the feature were the only thing that could slow down the lead pair.

But with just a couple laps remaining, Altobelli powered past Corbin to regain the lead and went on to victory. Rick Hulson was able to get by Corbin for second, while Alyssa Rowe and Ray Kable III rounded out the top five.

“I thought Corbin had me. He looked really good tonight and my car actually got a little bit better the longer the race went there, but that was just a really good race.”, elated a jubilant Altobelli in his winner’s interview.

Sam Archer collected his career first Hagerstown Speedway Pure Stock win in a wire to wire effort to hold off Doug Hoffman in the 15 lap contest.  Jamie Zentmyer, Wayne Hawbaker, and Keith Koontz completed the top five.

Defending Hobby Stock track champion Davey Gross, Jr. was awarded the victory after Jonathan Raley was disqualified due to a technical infraction. All finishers were advanced up a position as it was Kevin Boyer credited with second as Jeff Dillon, Billy Ecton, Jr., and Tom Caravello finished in the top five.

Robbie Carroll picked up the U-Car feature win after a battle with Chris Anderson for the lead. The early race leader regained the top spot as Anderson’s car began to slow down in the final laps. Ricky Weaver, Jr. finished third, Wayne Brenize finished fourth, and Anthony Varner finished fifth.

Scott Rickrode and John Marks won the Penn-Mar Vintage Racers combo feature in the Modified and Sportsman divisions, respectively.

Davenport Scores LOLMDS Schetrompf Memorial at Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, MD – “Superman” Jonathan Davenport picked up the $12,000 payday in front of a packed house during the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series 37th annual Stanley Schetrompf Memorial at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.

The 50 lap triumph was his first career win at the Hub City half-mile and the fourth LOLMDS win of the 2018 season for the series point leader. It also marks the eleventh winner in eleven LOLMDS races held at Hagerstown.

The Blairsville, Georgia veteran ran the table on the evening with setting quick time with a lap time of 18.735 seconds, a heat race win from start to finish, and a dominant performance leading wire to wire in the feature event.

Davenport immediate drove away from 2017 Super Late Model track champion Kyle Lee to retain the top spot from his pole position start. Within four laps, multi-time series champion Scott Bloomquist drove his mount into the runner-up spot and began his chase of the leader.

Only two cautions and some racing through lapped traffic allowed Bloomquist and youngster Tyler Bare to close in on Davenport, but the driver of the Lance Landers owned No.49 wasn’t going to be denied victory on this night.

In Victory Lane, Davenport said: “Man, all the credit goes to my crew. They are awesome. Jason and Tyler do a great job, and Kevin (Rumley) is back there working all the time. This was a new car last week, so we’ve got two wins in three races now. It’s definitely a good piece. Thanks to Lance Landers and Steve Martin of Crop Production Services for giving me this opportunity. I was definitely getting tighter and tighter at the end. The track was taking a little bit of rubber especially through three and four. Thanks to all the fans for coming out tonight.”

Bloomquist and Bare finished second and third, respectively while fending off a late-race challenge from Tim McCreadie and Mason Zeigler to round out the top five.

Craig Parrill was victorious in the 15 lap Pure Stock special from behind the wheel of his own No.34c. Parrill withstood the challenges of Jeremy Tinsman for a second feature win in 2018. Sam Archer finished third, while Bob Egley finished fourth and last week’s feature winner Doug Hoffman finished fifth.

Notes:  38 SLM entered the pit area for a race that paid $1,000 to take the green flag.

Trever Feathers had mechanical problems that prevented him from racing in his qualifying heat, but he was guaranteed a starting position on the grid because of his opening night win. Feathers started at the tail end of the field and charged all the way up to sixth place by Lap 22. His bid for the upset win came to an end on Lap 38 when he pulled pitside.

Kyle Lear fell victim to an unfortunate break before the green flag flew. Lear qualified ahead of former World of Outlaws champion Josh Richards in the second B-main, but was unable to compete in the feature event.

A very large crowd filed into the grandstands and witnessed three and four wide racing throughout the pack during the LOLMDS feature event. Feathers wasn’t the only driver that moved up through the field as McCreadie started in 15th, and sixth –place finisher Earl Pearson, Jr. began from 20th on the grid. Josh Richards (12th from 23rd), and Don O’Neal (10th from 18th) also made big advances through the main event.

Bernheisel, Weaver, Hoffman, and Raley Score at Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, MD – Bryan Bernheisel was victorious in his No. 119 BRC Lazer Super Late Model for his first feature win of 2018. Bernheisel led from green to checkers over a fast closing Marvin Winters in the final laps of the 20 lap main event.

“My crew guys were giving me signals that he (Winters) was closing in on me, and I knew I had to make something happen”, remarked the winner in victory lane as a reference to using a lapped car as a pick to keep Winters at bay.

Scott Palmer was third, followed by Brian Booze and fifth-place finisher Justin Kann.

SLM heats were won by Bernheisel and Winters.

Justin Weaver penciled his name in the 2018 win column with a victory in the 20 lap Late Model Sportsman feature. The win also guaranteed Weaver a starting spot for the Hub City race with the Mason-Dixon Shootout Series scheduled for May 26.

Weaver started from the pole, and was only slowed by a caution with several laps to go. He was followed at the checkers by Bobby Beard, James Lichliter, Rodney Walls, and Robbie Black.

LMS heats were won by Black and Lichliter.

Doug Hoffman drove the Randy & Renae Clegg No. Super7 to the 15 lap Pure Stock feature win. Hoffman worked his way up to the front after a few laps while running down early race leader Bryan Neff.  Hoffman made his way to the lead following a restart, and powered away from the rest of the field for his first career win at Hagerstown.

Following Hoffman at the finish were Dillon Wilson, Dwayne Snyder, Jamie Zentmyer, and Michelle Walls. Walls and Neff were the heat race winners.

Jonathan Raley led from start to finish in the 15 lap Hobby Stock feature for his first win of the season. Rounding out the top five spots were Jeff Dillon, Billy Ecton, Jr., Dalton Ritchey, and Drew Fertig. Heat winners were Tom Caravello and Eric Johnson.

Notes:  Rodney Walls pulled double duty in the SLM and LMS features, and ended the night with a top five and ten finish. He drives one of the oldest chassis around as his LMS machine is a Rocket Chassis built in 1994.

Doug Hoffman landed the ride in the 2017 Hagerstown Speedway track championship machine in the off-season after previous driver Sean Dawson vacated the seat into retirement. Dawson was in the Super 7 pit area to lend the team a hand as a crew member.

Michelle Walls impressively drove from seventh to win her heat race. She drew the pole for the feature, but fought a loose car to still hang on to a top five finish in the feature.

The four division program began at 6pm, and the final checkered flag flew about three hours later.

April 21 brings the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for the Stanley Schetrompf Memorial with a Pure Stock special event. Race time begins at 7pm.

Racing This Weekend Cancelled

Due to the cold temperatures forecasted for this Saturday, officials at Hagerstown Speedway have decided to cancel the event scheduled for April 7. A replacement event will take place with the Mason-Dixon Shootout Series, Hobby Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Mini-Stocks (RWD) on August 18. More information about August 18 will be revealed as details develop, and the schedule is subject to change.

Upcoming events on April 14 include the Hub City Guaranteed Qualifier for all regular classes (LMS, PS & HS), plus the first of our 20/20 Super Late Model Dash races that will feature 20 cars for 20 laps, paying $1,500 to win, $300 to star, and $100 tow money.

April 21 brings in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for the annual Stanley Schetrompf Classic 50 for Super Late Models along with a Pure Stock Special.

Wrapping up the month of April on the 28th will be the HTMA Mid Atlantic Modifieds, Penn Mar Vintage Racers, Pure Stock, Hobby Stock & U-Cars (Home Track Rules).

And kicking off the month of May on May 5 will be the Frank Sagi Tribute/ ARCH Night with Super Late Models, HTMA Mid Atlantic Modifieds, Pure Stock & Hobby Stocks. More details of this grand event will be released soon.

Feathers Dominates Ultimate NE Series Opener at Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, MD – In the inaugural debut of the Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series and the 71st season opener at the Hagerstown Speedway, Trever Feathers parked his ride into victory lane at the end of the 30 lap Super Late Model feature event.

The $4,000 payday was the fourth career SLM win at the Hub City oval for the Winchester, Virginia driver of the No.20 Devenney’s Racing Engines, Barry Wright Race Cars machine.

Feathers powered past pole sitter Matt Cosner on the high side after the drop of the green flag, and led the first lap before a caution unfurled for the spun car of Scott Palmer.

Feathers was all by himself out front on the restart with the Delaware-style restart, and used it to his advantage by pulling away with clear race track.

Feathers stretched out his lead over Cosner, leading by about six seconds at the halfway point until he encountered traffic. The lead over Cosner was cut in half, but once Feathers cleared traffic, his lead expanded back to where it was.

Two late race cautions with the last setting up a one lap shootout still wasn’t enough for Cosner to make a challenge to Feathers. Feathers drove away to a convincing win.

In victory lane, Feathers said: “About halfway, the track started bolding, so I just kind of backed myself down when I caught those lapped cars. I knew I wasn’t going to pass them unless they messed up, so I just tried to be there. I was just trying to take care of my tires and pray for no cautions which we got two of them with three to go, so I’m glad we were able to come up here tonight and get the win with the Ultimate series.”

Kenny Moreland finished third, followed by Mason Zeigler and Jason Covert to round out the top five.

Quick timer of the night and picking up $100 from Roy’s Body Shop was Dale Hollidge with a best lap of 20.372 seconds. Heat race winners were Cosner, Jared Miley, Feathers, and Moreland. Ryan Montgomery won the B-main.

Michael Warrenfeltz used a last lap pass to take away the win from Craig Parrill in the Pure Stock feature. Warrenfeltz pulled along side of Parrill down low on the backstretch with half a lap remaining to take the checkered flag by a fender length.

They were followed by Dillon Wilson, Michelle Walls, and Jamie Zentmyer at the finish.

Travis Brown held off the challenges of Matt Worley and Chris Anderson as the trio raced bumper to bumper to take the checkered flag in the 15 lap U-Car Feature. The trio was trailed by Justin Williamson and Kent Leonard at the finish.

Pit Notes: 29 SLM were on hand to attempt to make the 24 car starting field that paid $400 to take the green flag.

Runner-up Cosner drew the pole for the feature, and remarked of how he would have preferred to draw the No.2 spot figuring the high side would be the preferred groove at the start. He was correct.

Parrill was back behind the wheel of his own No.34c Chevy Pure Stock instead of the Dickie Tharp No.3.

Each division boasted full fields of cars for their respective features.
