Late Model Sportsman Headlining Multiple Events in 2019

Since the mid 1970’s and a couple of name changes over that time period, the Late Model Sportsman division has been a popular category at Hagerstown Speedway. The steel block, 358 cubic inch racers often produce some of the most competitive racing around this area.

The purse for LMS regular shows have been increased significantly up from $550 to win, now paying $800 to win and $100 to start the feature event.

The LMS will be featured over a dozen nights in 2019, starting on March 30 with headlining the official season opening point race. Pure Stocks and Hobby stocks will also be racing in their opening point races, respectively. U-Cars are also scheduled for their first of eight scheduled appearances.

The same lineup will be in action on April 6 as Accent Imaging/The Trophy Shop presents the Hub City 100 Guaranteed Qualifiers.

LMS teams will be in action on April 20 and again on April 27 with Pure Stocks, Hobby Stocks, and U-Cars in the Turn 5 Turnaround Spring Small Car Nationals. LMS teams will be racing for $1,500 to win, PS are going for $750, HS will go for $500 to win, and $300 will go to the U-Car winner.

The first of three LMS races sanctioned by the Mason Dixon Shootout Series will be featured on a Friday night special during the IMCA East Coast Sprint Nationals on May 24.

June 1 is another big night for the LMS as they will participate in the Hub City 100. The 35 lap race pays $1,500 to win. Pure Stocks will compete for 25 laps and $500 to win in the Cornett Tribute.  $500 goes to the Hobby Stock winner after 25 laps, and $300 is up for grabs in the 15 lap U-Car feature.

The LMS are on the card for the 3rd-annual Frank Sagi Tribute on Sunday, June 23, and again on June 29.

The MDSS returns on July 6, while the final LMS point race is scheduled on July 20. The final MDSS sanctioned race will be held as part of the Turn 5 Turnaround Summer Championship on August 24 with another $1,500 to the winner.

Wrapping up the LMS season will be the traditional Small Car Nationals with qualifying on September 13 and feature event on September 14.

With a purse increase for regular shows, along with several other higher paying events, the Late Model Sportsman competitors have a lot to look forward to racing at Hagerstown Speedway in 2019.

A Variety of Racing at Hagerstown Speedway In 2019

Officials at Hagerstown Speedway have released the tentative schedule of events for the 2019 racing season, showcasing a wide variety of racing divisions and special events including Super Late Models, Late Model Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Hobby Stocks, E-Mods, Sprint Cars, and much, much more.

As long as weather permits, Test and Tune days for all classes of cars wishing to get their machines dialed in before the start of the season will take place over the month of March on March 2, 9, and 16.

Super Late Models still have a major presence at the fabled facility. Throughout the racing season, the SLM will be featured for seven special nights of racing.

The 72nd lid-lifter is set to kick off on March 23 with the Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series, paying the winner $3,000 and awarding them a guaranteed qualifier for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event. Joining the UNSLMS will be the Pure Stock and U-Car divisions under a Home Track Rules format.
As mentioned, the LOLMDS comes into the Hub City on April 13 with some of the finest SLM racers in the country for their annual visit of the Stanley Schetrompf Classic, going 50 laps and paying $12,000 to the winner. A Pure Stock Special will be on the undercard.
May 4 features SLM racing with a 20/20 Dash. Twenty cars will go for 20 laps, paying $1,500 to win and $300 to start. Non- qualifiers will receive $100 tow money. Featured with the SLM will be the Mid Atlantic Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Hobby Stocks, and the Penn-Mar Vintage Racers.

Then on Sunday, June 23, the 3rd-annual Frank Sagi Tribute/ARCH Night featuring special guest Tom Peck will highlight a night of racing you sure won’t want to miss. As it was for many years on Sunday evenings, the Late Model Sportsman and Pure Stocks will be part of the show.

July 20 features the annual Red Nininger Memorial, and August 3 brings back the UNSLMS for a $5,000 to win feature event.

And rounding out the SLM schedule will be the 1st-annual Turn 5 Turnaround Summer Championship, paying $4,000 to the winner on August 24. Joining the SLM are the Mason Dixon Shootout Series , PS, and HS paying extra purse monies to win as well.

Weather Forces SCN Cancellation and Ends 2018 Season

Due to the gloomy outlook forecasted because of the incoming Nor’easter storm and the increasing percentage of rain predicted to come this weekend, officials at Hagerstown Speedway have decided in the best interests of the racers and fans to cancel the 12th-annual Small Car Nationals.

Race teams that already pre-entered for the SCN will have their entry fee refunded. Please be patient as management will be processing funds to be returned. Drivers that won the automatic qualifier races for the 2018 SCN will be granted a guaranteed spot in the 2019 SCN.

With this decision, this abruptly concludes the 2018 racing season. Unfortunately, this season was severely affected by rain, forcing the postponement or cancellation of over half the events that were originally scheduled in 2018. We all hope that 2019 brings us a much better season of cooperative weather.

We would like to thank everyone that supported Hagerstown Speedway in 2018, and we look forward to having you back with us again in 2019. The staff at Hagerstown Speedway is already working diligently on assembling the 2019 schedule for the 72nd season of racing. Hub City 100 Honors Go To Covert, Weaver, Wilson, and Mills

HAGERSTOWN, MD – Jason Covert held off a hard charging Gregg Satterlee over the final half of the 40 lap portion of the Hub City 100 to pick up a victory in the Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series season finale at Hagerstown Speedway. The York Haven, Pa. pilot of the Cameron-Mann No.72 Rocket scored his first UNSLMS win of the season, and first with the series.

Covert inherited the lead after the ninth circuit as pole sitter and race leader Kyle Lee spun while entering lapped traffic. Covert had to contend with the challenges of Allen Brannon and Satterlee before settling with the lead after a 3-way battle for the top spot.

Covert survived a few restarts as Satterlee valiantly tried to get by, but to no avail. Covert drove on to the win, worth $5,000.

“Well, there was ten to fifteen cars here that could’ve won tonight with no issue. Competition is tougher now than it has ever been, I’m just tickled to win a race”, said Covert in his winner’s interview.

Following Covert at the finish were Satterlee, Dylan Yoder, 2018 UNSLMS champion Jared Miley, and Brannon.

During time trials, Satterlee shattered the track record turning a lap of 17.089 seconds that computes to an average speed of about 110 mph around the Hub City half-mile.

2018 Late Model Sportsman track champion and Mason Dixon Shootout Series point leader Justin Weaver powered past fellow front row starter Michael Walls off of turn two to take the lead on the first lap, and never looked back the rest of the way to take the 25 lap win worth $2,000.

As Weaver wandered through traffic, the action was heavy behind him as Cody Kershner and Ralph Morgan battled for second place. Morgan briefly settled into second, but he jumped the cushion in turn four, allowing Kershner to move to within five car lengths of Weaver’s lead.

That advantage was wiped out with a final caution that setup a two lap dash to the finish, but Weaver was too strong on the restart and went on to the victory.

Kershner, Morgan, Frankie Gordon, and Shaun Jones completed the top five.

Dillon Wilson picked up the 20 lap Pure Stock feature after a spirited battle for the lead that saw several exchanges for the top spot.

Bob Egley and Mike Desch paced the field at the start, but Jamey Swank quickly entered into the foray for the lead as he moved around Desch for second place, and around Egley for the lead on Lap 2. Swank and Egley battled side by side, and Egley was the leader at the halfway point.

Swank reclaimed the lead on lap 13 after a restart, but a caution a lap later bunched up the field and setup a series of cautions in the closing laps. Within those restarts, Wilson put himself into position to challenge for the lead and passed Swank on Lap 16.

Wilson survived one final restart as the leader, and withstood a shuffling of positions behind him to take the $500 winner’s check.

Jamie Zentmyer came through at the end to finish second, while Swank, Egley, and Doug Hoffman finished fifth.

Jamie Mills put $500 in his pocket, winning the 15 Hobby Stock feature that was caution-marred, using caution laps to count toward the time-shortened affair. He was followed at the finish by Drew Fertig, Brady Daniels, Dylan Rutherford, and Chuckie Johnson.

Notes:  146 race cars overfilled the pit area as over 20 teams had to be parked outside the track near the quarter midget facility.

17 cars timed quicker than the former SLM track record of 17.866 seconds that was set by Kenny Moreland in August. Dylan Yoder first broke the mark with a 17.201 before Satterlee cranked out his lap to reset the record on the very fast track surface.

Covert’s win came at the final SLM appearance of the season at Hagerstown, just as it did in 2017.

Justin Weaver pulled double duty racing in both the UNSLMS and MDSS feature events. The MDSS winner also pulled a solid 7th place finish in one of his few starts in the Coleman No.72 SLM.

UNSLMS and MDSS Lead Action Packed Hub City 100

Hagerstown Speedway returns to racing this Saturday, October 13 with an action packed program featuring the Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series and the Mason Dixon Shootout Series as part of the Hub City 100 presented by All Things Automotive.

This will be the final appearances by the top regional series for the Super Late Models and the Late Model Sportsman.

The UNSLMS will be battling for $5,000 to win and $400 to start in a 40 lap main event. Going into the season finale, Jared Miley leads Matt Cosner by only five points, and just six markers ahead of Ross Robinson.

Ryan Montgomery trails Miley by 43 points, and 2017 Hagerstown Speedway SLM track champion Kyle Lee is fifth in the standings, 55 points from the lead.

The MDSS will be gunning for $2,000 to win in a 25 lap feature event. 2018 Hagerstown Speedway LMS track champion Justin Weaver leads the way in series points over Devin Hart, Shaun Jones, Brad McGinnis, and Devin Frey.

Pure Stock and Hobby stock racers are also racing for an increased payout with $500 going to the winners in the respective 20 and 15 lap feature events.

This is shaping up to be a great show for the fans as car counts in all divisions are expected to be full fields of competition.

Pit gates open at 3:30pm, grandstands open at 4pm. General admission is $18, students/seniors/military $15, and kids age 12 and under are always free. Pit admission is $35.

Remembering Greg Hodnett

The staff at the Hagerstown Speedway sends our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, team, and fans of 410 Sprint Car driver Greg Hodnett. Hodnett succumbed to injuries suffered in a racing accident in Pennsylvania on September 20, 2018. He was 49 years old.

Along with many other wins and championships at various tracks and series’, Hodnett was a winner of 7 features at Hagerstown Speedway in his career. Notably, he was a 3-time Octoberfest winner, and twice each for the World of Outlaws and PA Sprint Speedweek events.

Hodnett’s wins came from behind the wheel of the Stewart No.12, Hamilton No.77, Kline No.22, and the Heffner No.27 machines.

Hodnett exemplified professionalism on and off the track as a great ambassador for all of Sprint Car racing. He will be greatly missed.
